Why You Should Add Organic Jojoba Oil to Your Skincare Routine

Jojoba oil is getting a lot of attention these days, with more and more brands adding it to their product lines, and even recent celebrity press citing responsibly grown jojoba oil as a beauty routine must-have. But what makes jojoba oil so effective, and why the infatuation with jojoba over other popular oils? Even more pressing, can your skin get the same benefits from any jojoba oil, or does the type of jojoba you choose matter? Learn how this oil works to nourish your skin, get our favorite tips for using responsibly grown jojoba oil in your routine, and take advantage of our insider industry knowledge to pick the most effective variety on the market.

How jojoba oil works, and why we love it

Celebrity endorsements aside, there are real, science-backed reasons jojoba oil is so popular. Here's why jojoba oil lives up to the hype, and why your customers will thank you for adding it to your beauty line.

It's an emollient and an occlusive

One of the best things about jojoba is its structure. While it is commonly referred to as an oil with all the typical oil characteristics, jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax. This dual structure yields the benefits of both an oil and a wax every time jojoba is applied to the skin. But what does that actually mean for yourself and your customers seeking out dewy, hydrated skin? Oil is an emollient, which means it helps soften and smooth skin by filling in any roughness caused by dryness. Wax, on the other hand, is an occlusive, meaning it helps delay the loss of moisture from your skin to the environment. When you use jojoba oil in your daily routine, you are adding moisture to your skin and making sure it stays put in the same step, helping you achieve that moisturized, glowing skin you're after.

Its molecular structure is similar to sebum (that's a good thing, we promise)

The wax/oil structure of jojoba oil closely mimics sebum, the oil that our skin naturally secretes. The point of moisturizing is to replenish and supplement oils that your skin may have lost or doesn't produce enough of, so there is nothing better to moisturize with than an oil whose structure is similar to what our skin produces on its own. This allows jojoba oil to absorb quickly without weighing skin down, meaning fast moisturization and a non-greasy finish. It's molecular similarity to sebum also makes it great for oily and chaotic skin types, as it is received easily by the skin and restores moisture without lingering where you don't want it or adding to the skin's oiliness. And by the way—occlusives can be rough for oily skin, especially if you use too much or pick the wrong one. Take advantage of this great occlusive if you're grease-prone, or if your brand caters to oily skin!

It's full of antioxidants

On top of all these great benefits, jojoba oil is known to be rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are wonderful for helping aging skin appear smooth and bright, and are also great for supporting skin in polluted environments (city dwellers, take note). For those of you formulating your own skincare, jojoba oil's antioxidants can also help delay rancidity in other carrier oils and generally extend the shelf life of other ingredients in your formulation.

How to use jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a great addition to every step and facet of your self care routine. Learn some of our favorite common and not-so-common ways to use jojoba oil for all-over hydration.

Face

If you're using jojoba oil on your face, we recommend that you incorporate it near the end of your skincare regimen. If you choose to use jojoba during the day, start with a great cleanser, then an exfoliant if you choose, and a toner. Next, apply your favorite serum and wait for it to soak in. Follow with a dime size of jojoba oil, and finish with your SPF of choice. For nighttime use, follow the same steps, but leave off SPF. You can also try applying a mask after cleansing and exfoliating, but be sure to skip the exfoliant if your mask already has exfoliating properties. This oil is great for all skin types, including sensitive, oily, and chaotic skin, so everyone can get in on the jojoba trend.

Body

We highly recommend using jojoba oil just after showering, while your skin is still slightly damp. Damp, warm skin absorbs the oil even more easily, allowing for deeper moisturization. As we've mentioned, one of the best things about jojoba oil is that it absorbs so quickly, so you can apply jojoba liberally without feeling greasy. It's also a great post shave or wax oil, as it's similarity to sebum helps prevent it from suffocating the skin.

Hair (yes, even hair!)

Though jojoba oil is somewhat lesser know for its hair benefits, we are seeing it show up in hair care ingredient decks more and more often. This is great news, because it is every bit as wonderful for your hair as it is for your skin, and can even be used as a more sustainable alternative to argan oil. Jojoba oil can help combat a dry scalp as well as dry ends, and can even help smooth frizz and support damaged or color treated hair.  Here's how you should use jojoba oil based on your hair concerns:

For 2C - 3A hair types and above as well as those with a dry scalp, we recommend applying jojoba oil directly to your scalp before bed. Your hair should either be dry or damp. Once applied, put a shower cap over your hair and leave on overnight. Shampoo and condition your hair in the morning to wake up to shiny, moisturized hair.

For fine, thin, or frizzy hair, apply jojoba oil to dry, unwashed hair, starting at the roots and working down to the ends. Leave the oil on for around 20 minutes, then shampoo and condition as normal.

For dry, damaged, or frizzy hair, apply a couple drops to your scalp and rub in directly after washing. You can also apply a couple drops to the ends if you need an extra moisture boost. Make sure the oil is evenly distributed, and that you don't over-apply to avoid weighing your hair down. After application, you can dry and style hair as usual.

What kind should I buy?

As you may have guessed, not all jojoba oils are created equally. Here are some things to look out for when picking a jojoba oil:

Responsibly grown: responsibly grown jojoba oil has a few key advantages over conventional. First, responsibly grown farming generally tends to be more earth-friendly than more traditional methods. Responsibly grown production is also strictly regulated, especially when it comes to pesticides and toxins. When you buy responsibly grown jojoba, you get a clean, pure product.

Cold-pressed: cold pressing is an oil extraction method that prevents jojoba beans from being exposed to high temperatures. High temperatures in production can dissipate the inherent nutrients in jojoba beans, reducing its skin benefits. Buy cold pressed jojoba oil to make sure you're getting all those great antioxidants we covered earlier.

Experienced, sustainable vendor: our jojoba oil vendor is one of the leading sustainable jojoba manufacturers in the industry. Their years of experience farming and manufacturing jojoba oil paired with their concern for environmental impact makes them a trusted and deeply knowledgeable source for jojoba oil. Plus, our longstanding relationship with this vendor allows us great pricing and access. This lets us offer cold pressed, responsibly grown jojoba oil for you and your business at competitive industry prices.
