Essential Labs, located in the Pacific Northwest, is a premium skin and hair care manufacturer boasting over 20 years of experience in crafting unique and effective products. We offer small batch manufacturing to ensure fresh options, catering to retail and wholesale companies for branding under their own labels, as well as DIY makers and crafters.
Responsibly-sourced ingredients and stock bases, available for direct use or customization, are among our offerings. Our facility accommodates the creation of custom products tailored exclusively to your needs, emphasizing quality, sustainability, and science-backed formulas. Our full-service capabilities encompass filling, labeling, packaging, and shipping products to either your location or a designated distribution center. Essential Labs values efficacy, safety, and sustainability and we’re proud to serve a diverse array of customers and businesses of all sizes. We craft all our bases and products onsite at our 70,000sq ft facility in Portland, Oregon, where we benefit from some of the cleanest and best water in the world. We’ve built a reputation for quality and consistency, and we believe everyone should understand what’s in their skin and hair care.
Our History
Essential Labs was founded by an innovative couple in 2002 with the goal of creating custom products for their children’s complex skin care needs. It grew from a kitchen operation all the way up to our current 2-building facility, now with the goal to make premium wholesale skin and hair care available to all. We’re very proud to support thousands of businesses around the globe and are constantly inspired by how they creatively market and alter our bases or craft their own unique products.
Essential Labs was purchased in late 2011, becoming a majority woman-owned business with an even broader commitment to sustainability and excellence. We moved from our previous location in SE Portland to the historic Industrial District in NW Portland in 2012, and have recently added an additional 15,000sf of adjacent warehouse space to accommodate our growth.
Although our facilities are not open to the public due to confidentiality and manufacturing requirements, we remain accessible through our blog and video content, community events (prior to the pandemic), attending and presenting at conferences, and donating to both local and national causes close to our hearts.
Who We Are
Essential Labs is proudly staffed by a diverse workforce with decades of expertise across all departments. Our lab has our certified cosmetic formulators and licensed aestheticians, who also work both in the lab and across customer-facing positions. We have master multitaskers in compounding working closely with a full production and QC team to bring your products to life. Our shipping and warehouse management teams are efficient and reliable, ushering your products to you via our carbon offset shipping.
